The EV Charging Buildout Is Real. Federal Funding Isn't Keeping Up With It.

Private charger installation is growing faster than ever — the NEVI program funding it is barely moving.

Two things are true about EV charging infrastructure at the same time, and electricians evaluating the specialty should understand both. The physical network is expanding quickly: the U.S. had 77,148 public EV charging station locations hosting more than 236,000 ports as of early 2026, and DC fast-charging deployment grew over 20% year-over-year, with roughly 19,500 new fast-charging ports expected to come online in 2026 alone. That pace is real installation work, done overwhelmingly by licensed electricians.

The federal program built to accelerate that buildout has badly underperformed, though. The National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program allocated $5 billion to states starting in 2021, but a January 2026 report using Federal Highway Administration data found states had spent only about 2%, or $94 million, of the $4.4 billion made available. A funding freeze in early 2025 was lifted after seven months, but disbursement has remained slow even since, and contractors who staffed up for NEVI-funded projects have faced repeated delays.

The private and utility-driven side of the market hasn't waited on that funding to grow. Specialty EV installation companies, national electrical contractors, and in-house teams at major charging networks are hiring directly, and industry sources describe some contractors as booked out months in advance — driven by fleet electrification, workplace charging, and commercial depot buildouts that don't depend on NEVI dollars at all. That's the more reliable near-term demand signal for electricians building this specialty.

Entry points into EV charging work are well established and don't require starting over. Residential electricians can add EV charger installation to their service line with relatively little retraining; commercial and industrial electricians transition more naturally into DC fast-charging and depot-scale work, which looks much closer to standard commercial electrical scope. The Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Training Program (EVITP) — a roughly 20-hour course combining online and hands-on instruction — is the most common credential electricians add specifically for this work, on top of a standard state electrical license.

The honest framing for electricians considering this specialty: treat public program funding as a bonus, not the foundation. Growth in EV charging installation is happening because of vehicle adoption, fleet contracts, and private capital, and that growth has continued through a period when the flagship federal funding mechanism has significantly underdelivered. A license, a standard apprenticeship background, and an EVITP credential are a more dependable entry path than betting on any single grant program.
