Nuclear Power Is Coming Back. It Needs Electricians Now.
New reactor construction, small modular reactors, and an aging plant fleet are creating a nuclear labor need the industry hasn't seen in decades.

After decades of near-zero new construction, nuclear power is entering an expansion phase in the U.S., driven by data center demand for reliable, round-the-clock electricity and federal policy support — the current administration has set a goal of 10 additional large reactor units under construction by 2030. That target, alongside a wave of small modular reactor (SMR) projects moving from design to early construction, is creating electrical labor demand that the existing nuclear workforce isn't sized for.
The scale problem is real and openly discussed within the trade. More than 80% of U.S. employers across nuclear construction, manufacturing, and utilities report experiencing hiring difficulty, according to 2026 workforce survey data, and industry estimates suggest the nuclear workforce broadly needs to roughly triple to meet the coming buildout. Electricians are central to both the construction and operating sides of that buildout. On new reactor and SMR projects, IBEW project data points to individual sites requiring 200 to 300 electrical workers sustained over roughly five years — comparable in scale and duration to a major data center or fab project, but with additional nuclear-specific safety, security clearance, and quality-assurance requirements layered on top of standard commercial and industrial electrical work. SMR projects in particular are structured as repeatable builds rather than one-off megaprojects, which industry organizers describe as preferable from a workforce-planning standpoint — steady, predictable crews rather than boom-and-bust staffing around a single large plant.
Compensation reflects both the specialization and the labor scarcity. Nuclear construction pay in 2026 has averaged in the $40 to $60-plus per hour range depending on role, location, and experience, according to labor market data — a premium over general commercial electrical work that reflects the additional certification, clearance, and safety-training requirements involved. Entry typically runs through the same apprenticeship and journeyman pathway as any other electrical specialty, with additional nuclear-specific safety and quality certifications layered on afterward, often provided by the utility or contractor rather than required upfront.
For electricians evaluating where the trade is heading over the next decade, nuclear sits at an unusual intersection: genuinely new construction volume (something the industry hasn't had in a generation), federal policy tailwinds that have remained consistent across recent administrations, and a workforce gap serious enough that utilities and contractors are actively investing in training pipelines to close it. It's a smaller, more specialized lane than data center or general commercial work, but for electricians willing to build the additional qualifications it requires, it's one of the more insulated specialties from ordinary construction-cycle swings.
